Gardening

Gardening, by its very nature, should always be a "Green" activity!

It's really easy and hugely rewarding to create a garden that is wildlife-friendly as well as pleasant for its human users - the most important principle is to do less of the boring chores, and more of the fun stuff: fill your garden with flowering plants, shrubs, trees and herbs, but go easy on the tidying & weeding.

WATER IS THE STUFF OF LIFE!

Bird baths can be ornamental or make-shift; what matters is that they are shallow, easy to access, frequently refreshed and cleaned regularly. Ideally, put them in a slightly sheltered place to protect the bathing birds from predators.

If you have room, put in a pond - even a small pond will attract and sustain a multitude of creatures. A wildlife pond needs less maintenance and expense than a fish pond. Pond life will arrive by itself, all you need to provide is the water and some suitable plants (although some will find your new pond by themselves, like the inevitable duckweed!)

Here's a good page for newbie ponders by the Wildlife Trusts, with detailed instructions.
