Hazel Dormouse

Our only native dormouse species is probably most familiar as one of the guests at the never-ending tea party in 'Alice in Wonderland', getting dunked in the teapot by the mad hatter and the march hare...

According to the ZSL, actual hazel dormouse populations have decreased by 55% over the last twenty-five years, and it is now extinct in 17 counties in the UK. Hazel dormice are fortunately still thriving in a few locations across Surrey, but their numbers are declining.

Should you be lucky enough to spot one of these beautiful little creatures, report the location to The People's Trust For Endangered Species but please do not disturb the dormouse or its nest!
