Working to protect Surrey's green spaces and wildlife
what we do
Here at Wild Surrey we want people to be able to reconnect with both our beautiful nature and wildlife.
With our wildlife in steep decline, our aim is to highlight individual species and show what we can all do to help them, and enjoy learning as we go along .
Our main focus is on meadows, because that's where it all starts! We need to improve our green spaces in order to help nature recover.
what you can do
Neglect your garden! The best kind of wildlife gardening involves a whole lot of doing nothing: leave the leaves, don't cut the grass, let it all grow a bit more. Insects will be grateful, and where there's insects, the birds will follow. If you want to be busy in the garden, why not sow some wildflowers or put in a pond?
Support wildlife organisations! They are always in need of volunteers and donations. There's a list of worthy causes on our 'rescues & hospitals' page if you don't know where to start.
Know your wildlife! We are aiming to create information pages on all the local species that are on the amber or red list (i.e. vulnerable or endangered) but unfortunately there are many of them, so this is work in progress. Use the drop-down menu to access individual pages.
Litter picking! It might not sound exciting... but removing rubbish prevents injuries to mammals and birds. It also makes the green spaces so much nicer, and that could motivate other people to do more, care more.
Organise community litter picks a few times a year to make it more sociable, or talk to local schools to get kids involved.
